Piano Lessons in Charlotte, NC

Sheet music rests on the keys of a piano, with a close-up view of both the music notation and the piano keyboard.

NFMC Festivals

There are two categories of events, which are at different levels. The Piano Scholarship level is more exacting and only for more advanced students. The piano festival is for all levels, and judging is very gentle. All ages are welcome for this event, including adults and beginners. Students play two pieces, one from a required list and receive an evaluation with comments.

There are other categories available, if desired, such as ensembles, hymn playing, composition, theory, and concertos. A student could enter multiple events. You can get more information on this organization at:

NCMTA  Piano Auditions

This is the first step for those serious students on the way to Glory. Pieces are drawn from a required repertoire list.  It is similar to Federation, in that students get an evaluation sheet, but different in the sense that it the judging is more exacting. Those getting the Highest Honors rating are invited to play in a recital after the audition. MTNA also sponsors other regional competitions, which  can be extremely competitive. You can get more information on this group at:

Charlotte Piano Teachers Forum

This is a local organization of very high caliber. Students play 3 pieces drawn from a list of required pieces, which are at a pretty high level. There are evaluation sheets for all and modest cash prizes for the best in each category. The judging is more exacting than Federation, but the comments can be very valuable for all. A theory test is required for this event and there is an honors recital later in the spring.

The Forum also has other performance events for the interested student throughout the year, including recitals and concerto competitions. You can get more information on this group at:

Charlotte Music Club Scholarship Audition

This is a local event for grades 10-12 in all instruments and voice. The amounts and requirements differ for the different categories, but basically, a student plays two or three pieces for a judge, and if chosen, receives scholarship money for future music studies. The auditions are usually in early March. I would recommend this for any advanced student of any instrument.
